What is Imigran?

Imigran is a medication used for the treatment of migraines – it works through the active ingredient sumatriptan, which belongs to a group of medications known as 5HT agonists.

What is migraine? 

Migraine is a common headache disorder, affecting around 1 in every 5 women and around 1 in every 15 men. A migraine is usually characterised by a moderate to severe headache, felt as a throbbing pain on one side of the head.

How does Imigran work?

Imigran works through the active ingredient sumatriptan. This medication belongs to a group of medications called 5HT agonists, and it works to reduce the swelling or widening of blood vessels in the head which is often the source of migraines. This helps to ease the symptoms of the migraine.

How should Imigran be taken?

Imigran should ideally be taken as soon as you feel a migraine coming on, although it can be taken at any point during a migraine attack. Usually, one 50mg tablet should be taken with water. Swallow the tablet whole, do not chew or break it. For some, a 100mg dose may be necessary. Determine which dose is suitable for you with a healthcare professional. Do not use more than one tablet for each migraine attack, and do not take a dose within 2 hours of your previous tablet. Do not take more than 300mg of Imigran in a 24 hour period.

Is Imigran suitable for me?

Imigran is suitable for use by those between the ages of 18 and 65 who suffer from migraine attacks. Do not use Imigran if you have a heart problem, a circulation problem, have had a stroke, have high blood pressure, have liver disease, are taking MAOI antidepressants, or are taking other migraine medications. Do not take Imigran if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.
