Warts & Verrucas
Warts and verrucas are both common viral infections; most people experience them at some point in their life.
Warts are typically small, rough lumps which most commonly appear on the palms, knuckles, knees, and fingers. Warts can come in a variety of forms, including ‘cauliflower-like’ lumps, flat and yellow spots, or clusters of warts (typically on the hands and feet). While warts are not harmful, they can cause itching, pain, or embarrassment.
Verrucas look similar to warts but often have tiny black dots under the hard skin. They typically form on the base of the foot and are likely to be painful.

What causes warts and verrucas?
Both are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). This virus causes hard, small lumps to form on the skin.
Are warts and verrucas contagious?
Although not highly contagious, they can be transferred person to person through close skin-to-skin contact or indirectly from contaminated surfaces (e.g. area around a swimming pool). Infection is more likely if the skin is wet or broken.
What are the treatment options available?
While warts and verrucas normally go away on their own, this can take months or even years. Thankfully, there are a couple of effective over-the-counter medications which you can use to significantly reduce this process.
