What are the causes of vaginal dryness?

Vaginal dryness is usually caused by changes in hormone levels (such as menopause, breastfeeding, taking the contraceptive pill or antidepressants, having a hysterectomy, or cancer treatment), use of different products (for example, perfumed soaps), or underlying health conditions such as diabetes.

The usual symptoms of vaginal dryness are:

• Feeling soreness or itchiness in and around the vagina
• Feeling pain or discomfort during or after sexual intercourse
• Needing to urinate more than usual
• Reoccurring UTIs (urinary tract infections)

Vaginal dryness is usually treated through creams or jellies that can be used both internally and externally. These help to replenish the moisture in and around the vagina while vaginal dryness persists.
