Fungal Nail Infections
Fungal nail infections (or Onychomycosis) are very common, and typically affect your toenails or fingernails.
Nail infections often start at the edge of the nail before spreading to the rest of the nail and can even spread to other nails. The affected nail can then become yellowed and brittle, eventually breaking off in parts.

What causes nail infections?
Nail infections are most often caused by the fungus dermatophyte. Fungal nail infections arise when your feet are warm and deep for long periods (e.g. sweating in a pair of trainers all day). You can also get a nail infection by walking barefoot through an infected area.
What are the symptoms of a nail infection?
Typically symptoms include yellowing or hardening of the nail which makes it difficult to trim and can be painful.
What are the preventative measures?
Nail infections can be prevented by following standard hygiene practices (e.g. washing hands and feet regularly) and wearing socks and shoes which allow the feet to breathe and prevent dampness.
What are the treatment options available?
There are several over-the-counter antifungal medications that are effective in treating less severe nail infections, including Amorolfine, Curanail, and Canespro Fungal Nail Treatment Set. If the infection worsens, then a course of antifungal treatment may be required.
