Eye Care

While many look forward to the better weather, others have to deal with a summer of itchy, irritated, and even swollen eyes as a result of seasonal allergies. An allergy to pollen, known as hay fever, is the dominant cause of seasonal eye irritation.

There are, however, numerous potential causes of eye irritation, including:

• Pet dander, dust, smoke, or pollution
• Intense air-conditioning or central heating
• Lotions, makeup, contact lenses
• Decreased tear production commonly caused by aging
• Starting at a screen for too long
• Continuous eye straining (e.g. due to incorrect lenses prescription)

Several over-the-counter treatments are available to help alleviate the symptoms of irritated eyes.
