What is Imigran Nasal Spray?

Imigran nasal spray is a medication used for treating migraine headaches. It contains a single dose of sumatriptan, a type of 5-HT receptor agonist.

What is migraine?

Migraine is a common headache disorder, affecting around 1 in every 5 women and around 1 in every 15 men. A migraine is usually characterised by a moderate to severe headache, felt as a throbbing pain on one side of the head.

What are the symptoms of a migraine?

Migraine main symptom includes throbbing or pulsating headache on one side of the head. Usually associated with additional symptoms such as feeling sick or being sick and increased sensitivity to light and sound. The symptoms may vary from one individual to another and some may experience the additional symptoms without the headache. Also, migraine symptoms can last between 4 hours to 3 days.

How does Imigran Nasal Spray work?

Imigran nasal spray works through the active ingredient sumatriptan, a type of 5-HT receptor agonist. This medication helps to reduce the widening of the blood vessels in the head that are believed to cause migraine attacks.

How should Imigran Nasal Spray be used?

Imigran nasal spray should be taken as soon as a migraine headache begins. For adults aged 18-65, use one Imigran 20mg spray into just one nostril. For adolescents aged 12-17 use one Imigran 10mg spray into one nostril. If Imigran nasal spray does not work, do not take a second dose for the same migraine.  In these cases the attack can be treated with paracetamol, acetylsalicylic acid or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

What happens if migraine attack recurs?

If you have responded to the first dose of Imigran Nasal Spray but the symptoms recur, a second dose may be taken in the following 24 hours, provided that there is a minimum interval of 2 hours between the two doses. It is important not to exceed 2 sprays in any 24 hour period.

Is Imigran Nasal Spray suitable for me?

Imigran Nasal Spray is suitable for those aged 12-65. Do not use Imigran nasal spray if you have a heart problem, have circulatory issues in your legs, have had a stroke, have high blood pressure, have serious liver disease, or if you are taking other migraine medicines. You should also avoid Imigran nasal spray if you are taking MAOI antidepressants. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask for advice from a healthcare professional before using the nasal spray. Do not use Imigran nasal spray if you are allergic to sumatriptan or any of its other ingredients.
