What is Levonelle?
Levonelle is a form of emergency contraception that can be used within three days of unprotected sex. It contains the active ingredient levonorgestrel, a synthetic hormone that prevents or delays the release of an egg from the ovaries.
How does Levonelle work?
Levonelle works through the active ingredient levonorgestrel – a synthetic hormone that helps to prevent unplanned pregnancy through blocking or delaying the egg being released from the ovaries.
How reliable is Levonelle?
Levonelle should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex to have the best chance of it being effective. If taken within 24 hours, Levonelle is approximately 95% effective. If it is taken between 24 and 48 hours after unprotected sex, it is 85% effective. If you are taking Levonelle 48-72 hours after unprotected sex, there is only a 58% chance of the medication being effective. After 72 hours have passed, the effectiveness of Levonelle is unknown.
How should Levonelle be taken?
Levonelle should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex in order to maximise its effectiveness – for the best possible results, take within 24 hours. It comes in the form of a pill that should be swallowed with water.
Is Levonelle suitable for me?
Levonelle is suitable for women who have had unprotected sex and require emergency contraception. Do not take Levonelle if you are allergic to levonorgestrel or any of its other ingredients. You should also not take the emergency contraceptive pill if you are already pregnant, or if 72 hours have passed since unprotected sex took place.
