What is Phenergan and how does it work?

Phenergan is an over-the-counter medication that aids sleep and treats insomnia. This medication contains promethazine hydrochloride, an antihistamine commonly used to treat allergies. As promethazine hydrochloride is known to cause drowsiness, it is also often used to help people sleep.

Does Phenergan work?

Phenergan has been shown to help people get to sleep, sleep for longer, and feel noticeably more refreshed in the morning.

How do I take Phenergan?

For temporary, short term relief of insomnia for an adult: 1-2 tablets should be taken orally with water, around 20 minutes before going to bed.

How long does Phenergan take to work?

For each use, Phenergan should kick in around 20 minutes after taking the tablet. Do not take Phenergan tablets for longer than 7 days at a time. If your symptoms get worse or don’t improve after 7 days, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away.

Is Phenergan suitable for me?

Phenergan is suitable for most people except those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or children under 16. Consult your doctor before use if you suffer from COPD, epilepsy (or any seizure activity), gut issues (e.g. ulcers), sugar intolerance, or liver or kidney disease.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Common side effects include dry mouth, blurred visions, light dizziness, unsteadiness, and difficultly concentrating. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if any of the common side effects get serious or lasts longer than a few days.

If you experience any other symptoms, including allergic reaction, confusion, blurred vision, or the yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual movements of the tongue, facial muscle spasms, rolling eyes and trembling, and tiredness which lasts for a long time, as well as any other side effects not listed stop taking the medication and consult a doctor immediately.
