Description

What is Aciclovir?

Aciclovir is a prescription antiviral medication that is effective in treating the cold sore virus, as well as shingles and chickenpox.

How does Aciclovir work?

These tablets work by preventing the virus from multiplying and spreading in the body, reducing the symptoms and duration of an outbreak. This medication is most effective when used at the onset of symptoms.

How to take Aciclovir tablets?

Aciclovir tablets should be swallowed with water with or without food. If you have trouble swallowing tablets, then you can dissolve them in a glass of water (50ml).

Does Aciclovir work?

Aciclovir tablets are the most effective treatment for cold sores. If taken at the very start of an outbreak, they help reduce the severity and duration of a cold sore outbreak. This medication can also help guard against future outbreaks.

How long does it take to work?

You should start to feel better after taking Aciclovir for a few days, however this depends on how severe your symptoms are and how quickly you started treatment.

Is Aciclovir suitable for me?

Aciclovir can be taken by most adults and children with no issues. However, anyone who is pregnant (or trying to get pregnant), breastfeeding, elderly, or suffers from kidney problems should speak to their doctor or pharmacist before taking Aciclovir.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Some of the most common side effects are headaches, dizziness, feeling sick, and sensitivity to sunlight.
