What is Phenergan?
Phenergan is a type of antihistamine belonging to the group of medicines called phenothiazines that works through the active ingredient promethazine hydrochloride. It can be used for the treatment of hay fever.
How does Phenergan work?
Phenergan works through the active ingredient promethazine hydrochloride – a type of phenothiazine and an antihistamine. It blocks the histamine that is produced by the allergic reaction to pollen and also helps the brain to feel more relaxed.
How should Phenergan be taken?
For Children aged 5-10 years, a single dose of 10mg or 20mg should be given at night, or 10mg given twice daily. Do not exceed 20mg given in any 24-hour period. For children over 10 years old and adults, start with one 10mg dose twice daily, which can be increased to a maximum dose of 20mg up to three times a day. The medication should be taken orally. Do not drink alcohol while you are taking this medication as it may affect its functionality. Do not take the medication for longer than 7 days – if you still feel as though you need this medication after a 7-day period, speak to a healthcare professional.
Is Phenergan suitable for me?
Phenergan is suitable for those over the age of 5 who are suffering from hay fever. Do not take Phenergan if you have taken an MAOI antidepressant within the last 14 days, or if you are allergic to promethazine hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients in this medication. Do not take Phenergan if you are in the last 2 weeks of your pregnancy or if you are breastfeeding.
